About the Avalon

The Avalon Theatre was built for the residents of Grand Junction, CO by publishing giant Walter Walker in 1923.  A naming contest for the theatre was held and “The Avalon” was selected.  The word “Avalon”, derived from the Welsh word for apple, is also associated with Celtic mythology and Tennyson’s “Idylls of the King”.  At the time, the Grand Valley was known for its apple production.

The City of Grand Junction took over the crumbling building in 1996 and performed a much-needed renovation in 2014.  The theatre now has 1,096 seats and the updated layout offers its patrons an intimate theater experience with excellent acoustic quality and visibility of the stage.

Both the Avalon Theatre, adjoining meeting space, and rooftop terrace can be rented for private parties.
